The following is a list of x-ray scattering beamlines available to the user community:

Available Synchrotron Beamlines

CMS (11-BM) NSLS-II at BNL Running CMS ("Complex Materials Scattering") is a three-pole wiggler beamline at NSLS-II, based in part on the design and hardware at X9 (NSLS). The beamline can perform transmission and grazing-incidence scattering across a wide q-range (simultaneous SAXS/WAXS possible), emphasizing automation, high-throughput, and in-situ measurements. The instrument is well-suited to studying nanomaterials. Contact Masa Fukuto, or Kevin Yager for details. LiX (16-ID) NSLS-II at BNL Running LiX ("Life Science X-ray Scattering") is an undulator beamline at NSLS-II, offering high flux in the tender regime. The beamline is optimized for SAXS/WAXS studies of bio-materials, including proteins in solution and bio-macromolecules organizing into nanostructures. CHX (11-ID) NSLS-II at BNL Running CHX ("Coherent Hard X-ray scattering") is an undulator beamline at NSLS-II, offering exceptionally high coherent flux. The beamline is optimized for XPCS, and coherent scattering. CHX is also capable of tradidtional scattering experiments, including SAXS, WAXS, and GISAXS. 7.3.3 ALS at LBNL Running 7.3.3 is a SAXS/WAXS/GISAXS/GIWAXS beamline, covering a wide q range (0.004 - 3 Å−1) and length scale (2 - 1500 angstrom); and well-optimized for materials science studies. Various sample environments are available, including DSC hot stage for transmission, hot stage for grazing incidence, tensile stage, hot stage for liquid crystal cell, helium environments, hot stage for capillary, slot die printer, solvent annealing chamber, etc. Robot for automatic sample exchange for GISAXS/GIWAXS is under test. Detector in use include Pilatus 2M (photon-counting, low noise, high frequency up to 300hz), Pilatus 300KW, Pilatus 1M, Pilatus 100K. See more details at ALS website. 8-ID-E APS at Argonne National Lab Running 8-ID-E is an undulator-based side station with these specifications. The beamline is described in Jiang et al, J. Synchr. Rad. 19(4) 627-636 (2012). CHESS D1 CHESS at Cornell Running D1 is a highly modular SAXS/GISAXS beamline, with available microfocusing optics. The beamline has in-situ microscopy and spectroscopic reflectometry for visualizing and measuring film thickness. A wide variety of in-situ sample environments are available. CHESS G1 CHESS at Cornell Running G1 is a SAXS beamline including a variety of specialized sample environments (in-situ integration with chromatography, temperature control, etc.). Available Labscale Instruments

Customized labscale instrument (based on Bruker Nanostar and SAXSLAB components) CFN at BNL Running This labscale rotating-anode instrument is available to users. Of course a labscale instrument will not have the flux or resolution of a synchrotron beamline; nevertheless this instrument is optimized for resolution, while providing sufficient flux for measuring strongly scattering systems (e.g. nanoparticles). The sample environment is under vacuum, and offers both transmission-mode and grazing-incidence stages. Contact Dmytro Nykypanchuk or Kevin Yager for details. SAXS, WAXS, GISAXS, GIWAXS 8.04 keV 0.005 Å−1 to 0.3 Å−1 (up to ~2 Å−1 using image plate). Available through CFN user program.

Future Synchrotron Beamlines

SMI (12-ID) NSLS-II at BNL Technical commissioning. SMI ("Soft Matter Interfaces") is an undulator-based beamline being constructed at NSLS-II. SMI will be a high-flux and high-resolution instrument optimized for grazing-incidence measurements on interfaces, though also capable of performing world-class transmission scattering experiments. Elaine DiMasi, Mikhail Zhernenkov, or Kevin Yager for details. SAXS, WAXS, GISAXS, GIWAXS, XR 2.1 keV to 24 keV Very wide q-range (SAXS and WAXS). Will be available through NSLS-II user program.

Past Synchrotron Beamlines

The following beamlines are no longer available. However, they are retained for historical reference.

X9 NSLS at BNL Decommissioned in Sept. 2014 X9 is an undulator-based (high-flux) and high-resolution beamline that can perform transmission and grazing-incidence scattering across a wide q-range (simultaneous SAXS/WAXS possible). Typical beam size is 150 µm for TSAXS and 50 µm for GISAXS (focus to ~15 µm is possible). Measurements in air or vaccum are possible. Sample environments for performing in-situ sample heating (RT-220°C for GISAXS, RT-80°C for TSAXS) are available. Accomodations for in-situ experiments (solvent annealing, electrochemical cells) are also possible. Contact Lin Yang, Masa Fukuto, or Kevin Yager for details.
